The Styrian Coarse Haired Hound goes by a lot of other names. For instance, the name for the dog breed in its home country of Austria is Steirische Rauhhaarbracke. They have also been called the Peintinger Bracke and the Wirehair Styrian Mountain dog. They go by these names based on the region of Styria within Austria from which they originate. This is a mountainous region, so the Stryian Coarse Haired Hounds were bred to be able to handle rough terrain.
The Styrian Coarse Haired Hound is a hunting dog of the scent hound variety. It has a very good sense of smell, which helps it find its prey. They are most often used for hunting the wild boar that spends their time on the mountains of Styria in Austria. The breed was originally created by a man named Karl Peintinger in the late nineteenth century. He crossed a Hanoverian scent hound with an Istrian Hound along with some other breeds. Unfortunately, since the Styrian Coarse Haired Hound was specifically bred to be a working dog, they do not make very good pets. This particular breed would much rather be working or hunting than acting as a companion to their family.
Having a medium build, the Styrian Coarse Haired Hound stands between 45 and 53 centimetres tall. This breed weighs between 15 and 18 kilograms, making them lean with very little body fat. As the name would suggest, the Styrian Coarse Haired Hound has a coarse coat.
