The Sussex Spaniel is often known purely as the Sussex for short. This dog breed is named in this manner because they come from the Sussex region of England. They were first created by a man named Mr. Fuller in 1795 who lived in East Sussex. He wanted to use a spaniel type dog that could hunt in rough terrain and through short underbrush. Since there were no spaniels that could help assist in the hunt in this manner during that time, he decided to breed his own. Mr. Fuller paired many different kinds of spaniels as well as other breed types in order to finally come up with the Sussex Spaniel, which served as an accomplished gundog.
Sussex Spaniels have a very distinct look. This particular breed has a long body, but they also have very short legs. This means they are a lot longer than they are tall. While they weigh between 16 and 21 kilograms on average, they only have an average height between 33 and 38 centimetres. This small stature makes them good at hunting animals in confined spaces. They can get to their prey a lot easier than other hunting dogs that may be too big, which was the main reason why they were created in the first place.
Sussex Spaniels typically have a golden liver colouring to their coat with hazel coloured eyes. Their coat is thick and can vary between straight and wavy, but it is never curly. These dogs are very loving and make great pets.
