The Teddy Roosevelt Terrier is a somewhat new breed of American terrier. They were created when English miners came to the United States. They brought several terrier breeds with them, which they then bred together. Through this breeding, two terrier dogs emerged. One had long legs and a firm body. These were called the Rat Terrier. The other form of the breed had shorter legs and was closer to the ground. These went by the name of the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier. They are also sometimes called the Rat Terrier Type B, although they were registered as the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier by the United Kennel Club.
Because they are so low to the ground, the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier makes a great ratter. Ratters are dogs that can attack, chase and kill vermin. This was especially helpful to farmers who often had rat or mouse infestations in their barns. The Teddy Roosevelt Terriers would get rid of the mice, essentially eliminating the infestation. While these dogs did a great job as a working dog, they also make a great family member. Teddy Roosevelt Terriers are friendly toward small children and other dog breeds of the same size.
Teddy Roosevelt Terriers are relatively small. They usually stand between 20 and 36 centimetres tall at the withers. While Teddy Roosevelt Terriers can have many different coat colours, there are a few that are most acceptable. For instance, they can be fully white, tri-coloured with white, black or tan, or be bi-coloured with a combination of black, chocolate, tan, red, lemon, orange, white or blue.
