Tenterfield Terrier – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Tenterfield Terrier is a very popular dog in its country of origin, Australia. It is named after the town of Tenterfield in New South Wales, Australia, although these dogs do not come specifically from this area. Rather, they have been living in many different areas of Australia, most notably the southern half of the country. While no one knows for sure, most believe that the Tenterfield Terrier is descendent from many similar breeds, such as the Australian Terrier, the Australian Cattle Dog and the Miniature Fox Terrier. Based on their looks, they are often confused with the Miniature Fox Terrier and the Jack Russell Terrier.

Because they are so small, Tenterfield Terriers excel as ratting dogs. They are willing and able to fight vermin such as mice, moles and rats. This makes them especially popular with farmers as the Tenterfield Terrier can take care of rodent problems in barns. While this is one aspect of the Tenterfield Terrier, these dogs also became popular as companions starting in the 1920s. People would keep these dogs as a family pet. They are very friendly and easy-going. They are social and will behave adequately around strangers. They also live a very long life; sometimes reaching even 20 years old, although 13 is the average.
