If you or your kids love theatre shows and performances, visit Royal Carre Theatre (formerly known as the Carre Theatre). This beautiful theatre is the most famous place in Holland.
In December 3, 1997, Oscar Carre, a circus master, established his circus theatre on the banks of the Amstel River. The Carre family, known for their circus acts, attracted hundreds of thousands of people from the city. During winter, the circus took place in the theatre, but the family toured outside Amsterdam during the summer time, which left the theatre empty for months. Fortunately, when other variety shows found their way to the theatre, it turned into a multi-functional theatre.
In honour of its 100 years of existence, Carre was recognised and received the designation “Royal”, hence the new name Koninklijk Theatre Carre (Royal Carre Theatre). Hein J. Jens was appointed as the new director of Carre in October 1997. In 1991, a huge restoration was made, which cost 20 million guilders. When the renovation was done, Carre was transformed from a circus venue with a little theatre accommodation into a big theatre with circus accommodation, complete and new stage housing, office space, modern dressing rooms, and a wide basement with storerooms and stables.
Various Dutch actors and comedians have performed in Carre Theatre. This theatre is also known for its musicals, such as ‘My Fair Lady’, ‘Cats’, and ’Les Miserables’.
Carre is located by the river Amstel (not far from City Hall). The theatre is open 365 days a year (without the usual summer break). For more inquiries, please contact 020-6225225 or log on to http://www.theatrecarre.nl/.
