The Treeing Walker Coonhound is an American dog breed that is a descendent of the English Foxhound breed. The breed started in the nineteenth century when a man named Thomas Walker started crossing other dog breeds with an English Foxhound that he had brought with him from the United Kingdom. Eventually he created the Treeing Walker Coonhound. This dog is named this way for several reasons. First, it is called a ‘treeing’ dog because it works best hunting animals that live in trees. It has ‘Walker’ in its name for the man that started the breed, Thomas Walker. They are called ‘coonhounds’ because, above any other animal, they are best at hunting raccoons. They can hunt other animals if need be as well.
While the Treeing Walker Coonhound is a very friendly dog, it still needs daily exercise and activity. It can’t be cooped up indoors for long or there will be health and behavioural side effects. Instead, the Treeing Walker Coonhound needs to be exercised daily. This is important for their wellbeing. Still, a major benefit of the Treeing Walker Coonhound is that they are good not only with small children, but with other dog breeds as well. Keep in mind that they are very vocal and will bray loudly throughout the day, which can be an irritation to neighbours living close by.
Treeing Walker Coonhounds are medium in size. They have an average height between 51 and 71 centimetres. They also have an average weight between 23 and 32 kilograms.
