This is a reliable form of contraception effective in males. This is otherwise termed as male sterilisation. This method is done as part of the permanent contraception.
This procedure is done to prevent the entry of sperm into the semen and thus avoid a conception. It is a simple and painless procedure and the person need not be at the hospital for more than a day. Other than the semen gets deprived of sperm, this procedure won’t affect the sexual deeds. It is carried out when the couple wants no more children. Bur before opting, be sure about your decision as the retrieval is a bit difficult. Other than this, a male may use a condom for temporary contraception.
Vasectomy can be divided into two types and are as follows:
Conventional Vasectomy
Non-scalpel Vasectomy.
In conventional vasectomy, the first step is to inject a local anaesthetic into the scrotum to numb it. This is followed by incising scrotum at two spots of 1 cm each. Through this incision the physician reaches the vas deferens and cuts out a portion. The remaining ends are tied up or sealed with the help of a special tool called diathermy. Dissolvable stitches are used to put the incision ends close and get them to disappear within a week.
In the Non-scalpel type, the surgeon will use a clamp to hold the vas deferens and with the help of a tiny forceps he opens up the hole hat is already made using a special tool. This avoids the need for an incision. The rest of the procedure is the same as in conventional type.
The advantages of the latter one includes minimal bleeding, no stitches, less pain and minimal complications.
Recovery
After the procedure the person may experience slight discomfort, pain and will disappear in a few days. Paracetamol and ibuprofen may be helpful in managing pain. Close fitting underwear should be worn to provide support to the scrotal bag. Within two days a man can be back to his routine life. He should keep himself away from lifting or moving heavy objects so as to prevent complications. The person must take care to wash and dry the area. On can resume the sexual life after a few days when he feels comfortable.
Complications
In most of the cases this condition won’t produce any complications. Tenderness, pain and discomfort are common ones and other than these a person may develop
Haematoma
It is a blood clot that may form as a result of the rupture of a blood vessel. It may result in a condition that is painful and scrotum may swell up.
Sperm granulomas
This condition arises as a result of escape of sperm from the vas deferens during the procedure resulting in lumps.
This is not quite dangerous and anti-inflammatory drugs can be used to manage it. If ever they assume bid size, surgical removal is the choice of treatment.
Infection
As common with all invasive procedures, unless the person maintains strict hygiene, he may develop infection as the microbes gain entry via the open wound.
Fertility
Though very rare, cases have been reported where the vas deferens rejoin and makes conception possible again.
