Vaser liposuction is a new way of performing liposuction. It’s less invasive than liposuction, the procedure time is shorter, the healing period is shorter, and there’s significantly less scarring and sagging skin than with standard liposuction. However, this is not meant to be a “weight loss” surgery. This procedure is for people in generally good health who are not overweight, but have stubborn pockets of fat that they want to be rid of.
With Vaser liposuction, a small probe sends out “ultrasound energy” and effectively breaks up the fatty deposits, which can then be extracted by way of suction. Vaser liposuction can supposedly distinguish between fat and other parts of the body (such as nerves, blood, and connective tissue) which is sometimes a problem with traditional liposuction. During the procedure, the patient is put under local anaesthesia to make the process painless. The procedure itself generally takes a couple of hours, and the results are seen immediately with continual improvement over the following months. As long as the patient maintains a healthy lifestyle, the success of the procedure can be permanent.
Swelling and bruising from Vaser liposuction is significantly less than that of traditional liposuction, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t any bruising/swelling at all. As with all surgeries, there is a recovery time and one should make sure to follow the surgeon’s follow-up instructions to maximize the effects. Patients are required to wear a compression sleeve around the area for one to two weeks to help minimize bruising and swelling.
