Very honestly, what did I learn from this movie, That Barcelona is a beautifully romantic place to be. The movie really is as much of an advertisement for Barcelona as it is a movie. Anyway, let’s move on.
It has a big star cast, some pretty good acting, and a star director. You probably shouldn’t base your judgement of the movie on what I’m saying here because this is one of those movies I’m not sure what to feel about. I still don’t know whether I like it or not!
Considering it’s a Woody Allen movie there’s lots of love and even more sex. With that established, let me give you a basic plot outline. Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) head out to an impromptu vacation in Barcelona just before Vicky’s wedding. This is where they meet Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) who doesn’t mince his words and straight away invites them to weekend ménage trios, a short flight away at Oviedo.
After being momentarily hesitant, the girls agree and head off with Juan Antonio. Javier Bardem is really good as the womanising Spanish lover boy. And then you see his temperamental, fireball ex-wife Maria Elena (Penelope Cruz) and you realise Juan Antonio is a romantic lover too. Penelope Cruz is brilliant in her partly psychotic, partly competitive character and the off-screen couple make quite a sizzling on-screen couple too.
It sounds like just another tale of the Latin lover but in fact it’s pretty fresh and fun to watch especially because the actors do a really good job. When I’ve decided how much I like it (or not!) I’ll update you!
