Education is one of the most deprived areas in under developed countries and there is always a need for teachers in many locations in Asia, Africa and South America. Many young people with experience in education use this opportunity to help poorer communities and also to experience new parts of the world.
Africa is perhaps the biggest area that requires people in the education sector. Across the continent there are countries where volunteer organisations work in cooperation with local governments as well as set up their own schools and training programmes. In Ethiopia, the majority of volunteers work in education, as there is a rapidly increasing number of children enrolling in schools. It is not only teachers who are sought after here; there are many positions for administration staff and programme coordinators.
Elsewhere, countries like Ghana and Namibia also take on volunteers specialising in education. In Ghana, as the education system has begun to stabilise, there is an increasing demand for people to help in running a variety of vocational intuitions, including teacher training schools and colleges.
Education is also in demand in Asia in countries like Pakistan where over half of children between the ages of 5 and 14 are not enrolled in school. There is always a need for teachers. In many Asian countries, caste systems and sexual discrimination are still very much prevalent, and many people have been stricken from society due to their gender or sexual preference. Many volunteer organisations now help these people and give them a much-needed education.
