The Wetterhoun is a dog breed originating from the Netherlands. They are sometimes called the Otterhoun or the Dutch Spaniel. The name ‘Wetterhoun’ translates into English as the Frisian Water Dog. They are named that way because they are said to come from the Friesland province of the Netherlands. The ancestry of the Wetterhoun isn’t completely clear, but most believe they are descended from gypsy dogs that mated with other Frisian dogs. They can be traced back for at least 400 years, but they could have been around for much longer than that.
Wetterhoun dogs are best used as working dogs. They are very popular on the hunt. They excel at working both on land and in the water. Wetterhoun dogs have typically hunted racoons and otters in the past, although they can hunt other medium to small sized prey as well. When out of the hunting field, the Wetterhoun can also make a good guard dog. They are very protective of their home as well as the inhabitants. They can sit in front of the home for hours at a time, keeping watch and protecting the property if necessary.
Having a medium build, the Wetterhoun dog breed has an average height of between 55 and 59 centimetres. They typically weigh between 15 and 20 kilograms on average. Female Wetterhoun dogs are a bit smaller on average than their male counterparts. Wetterhoun dogs have a thick and curly coat that keeps them warm in cold climates, or while in the water.
