What is the Female Condom

The female condom works on the same principle as the male condom. The differences are that the female is the one wearing it and it is made to fit loosely against the cervix as opposed to the male condom which fits the penis snugly. The condoms are both composed of latex materials.

The female condom is made as a sheath with two rings, one at either end. One ring rests against the cervix while the other ring encircles the labial area. The female condom fits loosely inside the vagina so that it can fit the contours of the vagina while still allowing plenty of room for the penis to move freely around in the vagina.

Some of the advantages of the female condom are that the woman does not have to rely on the man to wear a condom and they can still reduce the risk of pregnancy or the transmission of a sexual disease by using a condom. Some women have also stated that the female condom is more comfortable than the male condom and that it is more convenient since it does not have to be removed immediately following intercourse.

The female condom has many advantages and does help to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease. There is, however, no completely effective form of birth control other than refraining from having sex. No one preventative device should be relied on entirely as a preventative measure as abstinence continues to be the best form of protection and birth control.
