Where to get a Ferret

There are many options available to the prospective ferret owner when the decision has been made to purchase one of these loveable creatures.

Ferrets can be purchased at a local pet shop or from a private seller. If dealing with a private party, buyers should be cautious of the “novelty seller” — one who has simply tired of keeping the animal and wishes to get rid of it. When purchasing a ferret from a store or private seller, the ferret should appear clean and well-cared for, without any obvious health or behavioural problems. Be sure to inquire about vaccination records, spaying or neutering, and any illnesses, surgeries or medical disorders.

Reputable breeders are an excellent resource when considering the purchase of a ferret. Ferrets purchased from breeders tend to be healthier than those bought elsewhere, and are usually up-to-date on their vaccinations. Many have already been spayed or neutered as well. Another benefit to purchasing from a breeder is that buyers will have the opportunity to observe the temperament of the young ferret’s parents, giving some insight into how the animal will behave once she’s brought into the home.

Adopting a ferret from a rescue or shelter is a wonderful alternative to purchasing. Rescue ferrets come in all shapes, sizes, colours and ages. Many shelters will allow ferrets to be adopted in pairs or even trios, making the transition to a new home much smoother for the animals. Ferret adoption is considerably cheaper than buying from a store or breeder, and all the proceeds from the adoption go right back into the rescue of ferrets and help support operating expenses.
