Your Relationship with Yourself

As a teenager, one of the most important relationships you develop is the one with yourself. Many adults in your life have probably told you that it is important to learn to love yourself before you fall in love with another or before you can expect someone else to love you. This may seem difficult, as all too often we focus on the negative in ourselves rather than the positive. However, if you take some time to think nice thoughts about yourself, you will be amazed at the difference this can make to your self-belief.

If you think you need some help with improving how you feel about yourself, why not write a list of all the things you like about yourself. If this feels too difficult, you could ask your close friends and family to write down the things that they love about you or the things they think you do well. It will be hard not to feel better about yourself when you see all the positive things that people see in you. Once you start focusing on the positive, your self-image will improve. There is nothing wrong with recognising when you do something well in fact it should be actively encouraged.

However, we often focus on one perceived flaw and the more we focus on it, the bigger a deal it becomes but others will not see what you see. We are always our own harshest critics. Please remember that no one is perfect and these quirks are what make each of us unique. Learn to celebrate yourself just for being you!
